Mega-Apartment Postponed by Developer – Citing Worsening Economics; What will happen to Seabra’s DTF move?

The developer, Kimco & New Creek LLC, who for the last two years has been working with city boards and commissions to gain approval to demolish the Seabra Supermarket plaza at 208 Waverly Street (AutoZone/Dollar General/Seabra) and to build a mega-apartment complex, has suddenly withdrawn their proposal, but with the possibly to re-apply in future. They have cited a worsening economic state and more expensive costs as their reason to withdraw the proposal.



As part of the expected demolition of the plaza, the city worked with Seabra Supermarkets to help them purchase the old Salvation Army building in DTF, where they were going to put a supermarket, with ‘affordable’ housing units on the second floor.



With the development off the table for an indefinite period of time, what will happen to the plan for the Seabra move??? Will the current landlord, Kimco seek to retain the supermarket as a tenant in hand, essentially a plaza anchor store, is more profitable for them then an empty plaza. The planned demo and rebuild of the Salvation Army site also is costly for Seabra. Will that too be delayed or cancelled?
